Education Day

The National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) Committee of Ottawa is thrilled to welcome over 5,000 students and teachers from the National Capital Region to participate in Education Day  The students will take part in interactive workshops and performances that share and celebrate the diverse Indigenous cultures of Canada. (Registered schools only.)

Expected Learning Outcomes from Education Day

Students will learn about:
-Canada’s first people’s including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.
-The historical and social significance of National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) and the summer solstice.
-Indigenous people in Ottawa and surrounding areas.
-Cultural and historical significance of the different aspects of a Pow Wow.
-Background on some of the NIPD performers that the students may encounter.

Interactive Experiences in Culture and Diversity

Students will experience:
-Interactive indigenous creative arts workshops
-Fun, interactive First Nations, Métis and Inuit games
-Storytelling, music and puppet theatre.
-Educational Powwow and traditional/contemporary Indigenous dancing and singing performanes
-Extensive selection of authentic Indigenous craft and food vendors with traditional foods available
